World Class Coaching Staff

Jennifer Averill is Wake Forest Field Hockey. Heading into her 26th season at the helm of the Demon Deacons, she owns an impressive overall record at Wake Forest of 351-166-3. Averill has established Wake Hockey as a perennial powerhouse, having won 3 National Championships and 4 ACC Championships during her tenure. She has been named National Coach of the Year 3 times and ACC Coach of the year 7 times.

Rich Sutton has been the technical director of Wake Hockey since 2013. Prior to joing the Demon Deacons, he served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at both Old Dominion University and Kent State University. At Old Dominion, Sutton helped lead the Monarchs to 3 conference championships in 3 years, as well as a Final Four. His experiences across Europe as a player and coach have gifted Sutton with an exceptional knowledge of the game and has bettered the Deacs’ style and performance each year he’s been at Wake.

Complementing the Wake Forest coaching staff is an impressive group of additional coaches and players. In recent years, England, Germany, Ireland, and New Zealand have all been represented through members of our coaching staff. Collegiate coaches from around the NCAA further add to the diverse and experienced coaching staff.  In addition, most of the current players on the Wake Forest team serve not only as coaches but as mentors for young campers.
